What is Nano CBD: The Small But Mighty Technology

Encapsulated nano CBD (Nano CBD) is becoming an increasingly popular ingredient amongst CBD product manufacturers. Touting increased bioavailability and rapid onset times, nano CBD appears in various products, including CBD beverages, creams, and gummies. The production of nano CBD involves processing CBD extracts using nano-lipid encapsulation technologies to stabilize the ultra-small lipid particles and improve overall usability and in-formula functionality.

Although skeptics exist, the researched benefits of nano CBD indicate that it is a valuable CBD ingredient format for fast-acting functionality, better formulation flexibility, and efficacy when developing CBD-infused personal care, beverage, and edible products.

Breaking Down Nano CBD

Various encapsulation technologies have been used for years as a superior delivery method in the pharmaceutical, supplement, and beauty industries. Offering kinetically stable liquid-in-liquid dispersions, nano-encapsulation involves “packaging” a molecule in nano-carriers to enhance a CBD molecule's bioavailability.

The creation of our encapsulated E-200 nano CBD follows a patented nano-encapsulation process. During the encapsulation process, the CBD molecules are reduced from approximately 4000nm in size to 200nm in size. The nano-molecules are then coated with very small lipid nanoparticles that prevent the CBD nanodroplets from merging back together. The encapsulation also allows for the release of CBD only when it comes in contact with the body. Once contact is made the CBD is released for immediate uptake by the body’s tissues.

Is Nano CBD Better Than Regular CBD?

By reducing the CBD ingredient’s size from 4000nm to 200nm and encapsulating it, we create conditions for the body to quickly and fully absorb as much of the ingredient as possible. Additionally, the nano-encapsulated format creates an ease of use during the production process unmatched by standard CBD ingredients.

The two biggest challenges when working with standard CBD Isolate and CBD Distillates:

1. Difficult to formulate with: All traditional CBD ingredients come in a form that must be prepped through heating and can only be introduced into an oil phase. This works for small batches but becomes more difficult to prep at high volumes. Additionally, no traditional CBD is water-soluble. Achieving stability in a water-based formula with a traditional CBD ingredient requires many chemical surfactants and emulsifiers.

2. Not fast-acting: The size of a standard CBD Isolate or CBD Distillate is too large to penetrate the skin or mouth’s mucus membrane. Topically the CBD in a product sits on the surface of the skin; when taken orally, it must pass through the long and winding digestive tract to be “fully” absorbed. This process generally takes about an hour. Even then, studies show that the same dose of nano CBD absorbs at much higher rates than its standard CBD counterpart.

The benefits of nano CBD relate to its ability to provide faster, efficacious delivery of CBD to the desired end-point. Compared to standard-size CBD molecules, nano CBD demonstrates higher bioavailability every time.

Our topical skin penetration studies demonstrate how our encapsulated nano E-200 CBD allows four times the amount of CBD to penetrate 3.3 times deeper into the skin. Our oral studies with our water-soluble, nano E-200 CBD show fast-acting onset times of 5-15 minutes compared to traditional CBD, which takes an hour to uptake into the body’s bloodstream.

Additionally, nano CBD offers robust stability, water-solubility, and tunable rheology. Creating a shelf-stable product is important for producing consistently successful CBD personal care, wellness, beverage, and edible products on a large scale.

Why Are People Skeptical About Nano CBD?

With all the scientific buzzwords and misleading jargon in the CBD personal care, wellness, beverage, and edible industries, it's no wonder that many formulators question if the nano claims are true.

Most expert queries relate to the claims of nano CBD’s increased efficacy in fast-acting onset, penetration, and deliverability.

Many factors beyond the specific nano-tech could impact the bioavailability of a supplier’s nano CBD. And there are many approaches to nano CBD. Our patented, water-soluble E-200 CBD has fast-acting and enhanced skin penetration data verifying performance and shelf-life stability.
